Paying for Therapy

Like many specialty providers, I do not accept insurance. Here are some possible strategies to help offset the out-of-pocket cost of therapy:

Use Your Out-of-Network Benefits/Submit Your Own Insurance Claim:

Many insurance providers offer partial reimbursement for out-of-network therapy. I am happy to provide you with a “super-bill” receipt to submit to your insurance provider if they accept out-of-network claims. Please contact your insurance provider before seeking services from me to ensure that you are eligible for out-of-network coverage and are comfortable with the reimbursement amount. Investigating the number of sessions your plan provides within a year and learning more about submitting claims is also essential when you call your insurance company to determine your out-of-network eligibility and benefits. In addition, please confirm that your insurance provider will reimburse you for telehealth sessions. You will retain full responsibility for payment of services, regardless of reimbursement (or lack thereof) from your insurance provider.

Use Your Flexible Spending Account:

If your employer offers a Flexible Spending Account (FSA), this is an excellent way to receive a tax-free benefit to help reduce the out-of-pocket costs for therapy. Click here to learn more information about FSAs. You will retain full responsibility for payment of services, regardless of reimbursement (or lack thereof) from your FSA.

Use Your Employee Benefits:

Some employers offer partial or full reimbursement for healthcare expenses or therapy as a part of their employee benefits package. In some circumstances, businesses may pay outright for executive therapy services, understanding that this enhances your leadership and effectiveness. Check with your employer to see if this is an option for you. You will retain full responsibility for payment of services, regardless of reimbursement (or lack thereof) from your employer.

Cancellation and Late Arrival Fees

Continuity of therapy is especially helpful for promoting positive outcomes; however, sometimes life happens, and things come up. I require a minimum of 24 hours notice for rescheduling or canceling an appointment. The total fee will be charged when a session is canceled with less than 24 hours notice.

If you arrive late for a session, a full session fee will still be charged.

Good Faith Estimate

You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical and mental health care will cost. Under the law, healthcare providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including psychotherapy services. You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency healthcare services, including psychotherapy services.

You can ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service. If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.

For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call HHS at 1-800-985-3059.
